Great Scott! It’s not often as an Eagles fan that you can say the team has a respectable Linebacker room.

Over the last decade, it’s become a running joke to suggest the Eagles will be selecting a LB in the first couple of rounds of the draft, while GM Howie Roseman holds the reigns. To further bemusement, mock drafts from respected journalists, NFL insiders and the like have had the Eagles picking up a LB in the first round for years, while the entire fan-base rolls their eyes.

Marty! your birds, Marty! We’ve got to go back to 1949!

Arguably the Eagles most decorated player of all time is Hall-of-Fame LB and Centre, Chuck Bednarik. Aptly nicknamed “Concrete Charlie” for his hard style tackling, Bednarik suited up in kelly green from 1949 to 1962 inclusive, accumulating 2x NFL championships, 10x first team All-Pro and 8x Pro-bowls. Prior to his illustrious NFL career, Bednarik also served in the United States Army Air Force as a gunner in numerous combat missions over Germany in WWII. The Eagles would go on to immortalise Bednarik by retiring the #60 jersey in his honour.

Punch in the year 2020 into the DeLorean and fast forward to the modern era, and the team has been churning through NFL journeymen and stop-gaps to fill the back end of the front 7. Names such as; Nate Gerry, Duke Riley, Eric Wilson – glorified special teamers whose names are sure to send a shiver down your spine.  Has any team or GM treated a single position with such negligence as Howie Roseman has in the last few years? Thankfully as we head toward the 2022 season there is hope, with some astute off-season pickups, the Eagles LB room has had a much-needed facelift.

Calvin Klein (Nakobe Dean)

The coolest kid in school. Considered by some to be the “steal of the draft” it’s easy to see why the Georgia Bulldogs captain has Eagles fans puffing their feathers. His personal and team accolades are astounding; National champion, winner of the Butkis award, a unanimous All-American, the leader of the best defence College football has had in a generation and many, many other superlatives. The Eagles have been crying out for a play-caller in the heart of the defence and Dean brings that intelligence in abundance. Dean’s versatility means he can almost certainly become a 3-down backer; an athletic pursuit player who led Georgia in TFLs and had the 2nd highest sack rate, to add to his physicality in coverage. Whether it’s underdogs, hungrydogs or bulldogs – this is a dog you want on your team.

Kyzir White

Another steal? Roseman has been picking the pockets of teams all over the NFL this off-season. A bargain for AJ Brown, a pittance for James Bradberry….but here’s the guy no-one is talking about: Kyzir White.

Kyzir was acquired from the LA Chargers as a Free Agent. The proverbial dipping the rod into the oil, whenever a team loses is a player is in the reaction from the support and the respective team’s beat-writers. Fortunately for Philadelphia, White had fallen out of LAC’s plans with their GM required to making the difficult decision due to being over the cap line.

White has already flashed in OTAs, making a play on the ball which lead to a turnover, as well as making plays in coverage and fully extending his body to get in-front of the ball. The pairing of White and Dean as ILBs in a 3-4 with Reddick and Sweat on the boundary? That could register 1.12 GIGAWATTS of excitement in the Linc.
